I am a woodwind/brasswind player and have always loved Raphael’s playing. As a child, I listened to every recording of his that I could get my hands on. John F. Phillips.

I toured with Mendez in the 50’s from the Bay Area to Los Vegas to Tucson Arizona . He was teaching privately at that time, his charge was twenty five dollars per lesson ,I was studying privately and the cost was $ 4.00 a lesson . The Mendez trumpet just came out at that time and they were sold before and after each performance .He would practice about four hours a day and not unusual to practice eight hours . Our band consisted of about 60 pieces .I have many fun memory’s of the tour. I am 88 years old at this time & still playing the trumpet, had a rehearsal today and concert this week.
